Easy DIY Fruit Fly & Gnat Trap
Banishes pesky bugs in hours—no toxic chemicals!
What You Need
-
1 small jar or cup (mason jar, yogurt cup, etc.)
-
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (gnats LOVE it)
-
1 tsp sugar (boosts attraction)
-
2 drops dish soap (breaks surface tension)
-
Plastic wrap & rubber band (or a paper funnel)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Mix the Bait
-
Pour apple cider vinegar and sugar into the jar. Swirl to dissolve.
-
Add dish soap—this makes flies sink instead of escape.
2. Cover & Trap
Option 1: Plastic Wrap Method
-
Cover the jar mouth with plastic wrap, secure with a rubber band.
-
Poke 5-10 tiny holes (use a toothpick) so flies can enter but not leave.
Option 2: Paper Funnel Method
-
Roll a piece of paper into a cone with a small opening at the bottom.
-
Place it in the jar (tip pointing down). Flies fly in but can’t navigate out.
3. Place Strategically
-
Set near fruit bowls, trash cans, or houseplants.
-
Within 24 hours, you’ll see trapped flies!
Why This Works
🍎 Vinegar + Sugar mimics rotting fruit (their favorite snack).
🧼 Dish soap removes water tension, so flies drown instantly.
♻️ Non-toxic—safe for kitchens with kids/pets.
Pro Tips
🔥 For stubborn gnats: Add a slice of banana to the bait.
🌿 Plant fungus gnats? Use 1/2 inch of red wine instead of vinegar.
🔄 Refresh the trap every 3 days until pests are gone.
Works better than store-bought traps!
